Central Government Exam Syllabus: UPSC, SSC, Railway, Banking

Central government exams are conducted by bodies like UPSC, SSC, RRB and IBPS. These exams are open for candidates from all over India. Here is a brief idea of what each exam covers:

UPSC Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS): The syllabus is very vast. Prelims has two papers. Paper 1 covers Indian History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science and Current Affairs. Paper 2 is CSAT which covers Reasoning, Comprehension and Basic Maths. Mains has 9 papers including Essay, GS 1 to 4, Optional Subject and Language papers.

SSC CGL: Tier 1 covers General Awareness, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English. Tier 2 covers the same subjects but at a higher difficulty level with added sections like Statistics and General Studies.

SSC CHSL: Tier 1 has the same four subjects as CGL but at a slightly easier level. Tier 2 has a descriptive paper with essay and letter writing.

SSC MTS and GD Constable: These exams focus on basic Maths, Reasoning, General Knowledge and English or Hindi. The difficulty is easier compared to CGL and CHSL.

Railway NTPC: Two CBT stages. Both cover General Awareness, Maths and Reasoning. CBT 2 is slightly harder than CBT 1. Some posts also have a typing skill test.

Railway Group D: One CBT stage covering Maths, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness. After CBT, there is a Physical Efficiency Test (PET).

IBPS PO and SBI PO: Prelims covers Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English. Mains adds General Awareness with Banking focus and Computer Knowledge. There is also a descriptive paper with essay and letter writing.

IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk: Same subjects as PO but at a slightly lower difficulty level. No interview round for clerk posts.

State Government Exam Syllabus: UPPSC, BPSC, RPSC, MPPSC and Others

Every state PSC has its own syllabus, but the base is similar to UPSC. The main difference is that state exams also cover state specific topics.

What is common in all state PSC exams:

  • Indian History, Polity, Economy and Geography
  • State specific History, Geography, Economy and Culture
  • Current Affairs (both national and state level)
  • General Science
  • Reasoning and Mental Ability
  • Hindi or English Language paper

What is different: Each state PSC gives extra weightage to their own state. For example, UPPSC asks a lot of questions on UP History and UP Geography. BPSC focuses on Bihar. RPSC focuses on Rajasthan. So apart from the general syllabus, you must also study your state's specific topics in detail.

State level exams also include posts like police sub inspector, revenue officer, teacher and block development officer. Each post may have a slightly different syllabus, so always read the notification PDF carefully.

Defence Exam Syllabus: NDA, CDS, AFCAT and Indian Army

Defence exams have a mix of academic subjects and general knowledge. Here is what the main exams cover:

NDA (National Defence Academy): Two papers. Paper 1 is Mathematics (Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Geometry). Paper 2 is General Ability Test covering English, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs and General Science.

CDS (Combined Defence Services): Three papers for IMA, INA and AFA. English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. For OTA, only English and GK. Maths covers Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Statistics.

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test): Covers General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning. There is also an EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) for technical branch candidates.

Indian Army Soldier (Agnipath): General Knowledge, General Science, Maths and Reasoning. The difficulty level is based on 10th and 12th standard.

After the written exam, defence candidates also go through SSB Interview (5 day process), medical exam and physical fitness test.

Banking Exam Syllabus: IBPS, SBI, RBI

Banking exams are popular among commerce and science graduates. The syllabus is focused on aptitude, reasoning and banking awareness.

Common subjects in all banking exams:

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Number Series, Simplification, Data Interpretation, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Speed and Distance, Probability

RBI Grade B has a different pattern. Phase 1 covers the same subjects. Phase 2 has three papers covering Economic and Social Issues, Finance and Management, and English (Descriptive). The difficulty is higher than IBPS and SBI exams.

Teaching Exam Syllabus: CTET, State TET, KVS, NVS, DSSSB

To become a government teacher, you first need to clear CTET or your state TET. The syllabus is based on what you will be teaching and how you understand child development.

CTET Paper 1 (for Class 1 to 5):

Top Preparation Tips After Reading the Syllabus

Reading the syllabus is only the first step. Here is how to use it properly for your preparation:

  • Find out which subjects carry more marks: Not every subject has the same weightage. For example, in SSC CGL, Maths and Reasoning together carry 50% of the marks. So give them more time.
  • Make a topic wise checklist: Write down every topic from the syllabus. As you finish studying each one, mark it done. This way you will know exactly how much is left.
  • Solve previous year papers first: Before you start studying, solve 2 to 3 previous year papers. This will show you which topics actually come in the exam and which ones are rarely asked. Focus on the topics that repeat every year.
  • Compare the syllabus with answer keys: Check the Sarkari Result answer keys of past exams. This will tell you the exact type of questions asked from each topic.
  • Do not study extra topics: Many students waste time studying topics that are not in the syllabus. Stick to what is mentioned in the official syllabus and nothing else.
  • Keep checking for syllabus changes: Some exam authorities update the syllabus or exam pattern. We update this page whenever that happens. So bookmark this page and check it regularly.

How to Stay Updated on Syllabus Changes

Exam authorities sometimes change the syllabus without giving much notice. Here is how to make sure you do not miss any update:

  • Bookmark this page: We update the syllabus section whenever any exam authority releases a new or changed syllabus.
  • Check the official notification PDF: Every exam notification has a section on syllabus and exam pattern. Read it carefully before starting preparation.
  • Follow the official website: Keep the official website of your exam (like ssc.gov.in, upsc.gov.in, ibps.in) bookmarked and check it every week.
  • Compare old and new syllabus: If a syllabus changes, compare it with the previous one. Usually only a few topics are added or removed. Do not panic and start from scratch.
